Good morning from the road!! We are currently on our way from Munich to Nuremberg. It's been 2 very long full days and I have lots of stories to tell.
Yesterday we went to Dachau concentration camp. I was expecting us to have a tour guide, but unfortunately we only had the audio guide... And I honestly hate audio guides. It was nice for us to be able to just walk around and go to the places we wanted to go to.
Most of what was Dachau concentration camp was demolished or rebuilt after the war. It is more preserved than other camps. In terms of size, it's much, mush smaller than Auschwitz. What I still can't my head around is that it is so close to the town and where people lived... And still live today. It is a beautiful place, but I don't think I could live there.
The firs place we visited was the "prison"art of the camp. This is where the "special" prisoners would go. (Picture 1). It is a very long building, with a hallway and many cells along each side. It was very cold inside and very eerie in there. I did not like being in this building.
From there we went in to the museum exhibition part. For €15 we purchased a book that has all the images and descriptions from the exhibit, and a CD with the same information. While in the museum part we watched a 20 minute video about the history of the camp. All I can say is Dachau was a terrible, terrible place to be. It was one of the first camps opened, and the last to be liberated. After leaving the video we went back outside to go to the other side of the camp to see the religion memorials. There is a Jewish, Catholic and a Protestant memorial. Picture 2 is of the walk across the camp.
Picture 3 is the entrance. Arbeit Macht Frei... Do you remember what this means?! Picture 4 is the camp, the star where the prisoners would have to be lined up and counted. And picture 5 is of a picture I took inside the museum exhibit. This is the same building I posted a picture of yesterday. It's eerie to see a building I was just standing in front of with a Nazi flag on it.
After leaving the concentration camp we drove in to the downtown area. It was so beautiful- up on a hit, amazing views of the Alps, and cobblestone streets. We only had about 45 minutes- but found a gelataria. Oh my goodness, let me tell you. You all know I've had my share of gelato and this was SO YUMMMY. who would have thought I would have some of the best gelato in Dachau, Germany??? (Picture 6!)
After leaving Dachau we headed back to Munich. The bud dropped us off downtown where we did some more sightseeing. Picture 7 & 8 is of an alley...I can't recall the name right now... But basically the Nazi's would be stationed down the street and when the citizens of Munich would walk by they would have to salute them. To avoid having to do this people would walk on this side street.
We walked through a large park area and because it a Sunday and such a gorgeous day there were tons of people. It was a really nice walk!! (I was worried about snow for no reason... Today it's going to be 74!! Woohoo!!)
We also went into a Catholic Church. (Pictures 9, 10 & 11). What kind of Greek columns did they use in here?!?
And now here I am on the bus, on your way to Nuremberg. I think it's about a 2 hour ride. Luckily it appears as if we are going in the opposite direction of commuter traffic (phew!!). Hopefully as soon as we get to the hotel I'll get Internet connection and be able to post this.
Hope you are all having a great vacation!!
:-) <3
